Brian O’Flynn
Bio
Hi! :)
I'm a writer, data journalist, political staffer and researcher, living between Dublin and London.
I have a degree in Economics and a masters degree in Politics and Data Science. My data skills are now very strong (my favourite programming language is R), and I have used them to investigate scandals in Irish hospitals and universities, for publications like VICE, The Medical Independent, The Ditch, and others. Through FOI investigations, I’ve also exposed bad practices in Irish councils and public bodies. You can see some of these articles in my INVESTIGATIONS section. I now consider myself a part time investigative data journalist - please commission me!
I'm very interested in political economy. My masters thesis was a quantitative investigation into the effect of institutional investment on house prices. I contributed a brief on European house price inflation to Oxford Analytica. Other research I did during my masters was concerned with ‘images-as-data’, and used facial/emotion recognition software to analyse visual media bias in coverage of Irish politicians. You can find these papers in my RESEARCH section. I've also done freelance data work for some PR firms, and as a research assistant in university. I’m open to commissions for freelance data work, so feel free to get in touch!
For the past two years, I have worked for four amazing independent senators in Ireland’s parliament. I have written dozens of legislative amendments, parliamentary speeches, and even legislation. My role also involved managing social media and dealing with constituency casework. Some amendments I wrote are now part of Irish law, and a Bill I wrote to control rent prices on new builds will soon be on the Senate order paper. You can view some of this work in my POLITICS section.
Before all this, I worked mainly as a culture journalist. In my early twenties, I began writing culture, opinion and thinkpieces for magazines and newspapers including The Guardian, The Irish Times, i-D, and VICE. You can see some of those articles in my CULTURE section. I interviewed lots of famous popstars, wrote a lot about music and gay culture, and also did some reporting on Irish political issues like REPEAL, and LGBT healthcare. I don’t do much of this type of writing anymore, but may revisit it in the future.
